About This Course
Video is its own craft, and this course treats it that way — from planning a shoot through to a finished, polished edit. You'll learn the camera and audio fundamentals specific to video, how to compose a shot that holds attention, and how to cut a sequence together that actually gets watched.
Whether you're aiming at content creation, event videography, or client work, this course gives you a practical foundation to build from.
No prior video experience is assumed — if you've done stills photography before, plenty of the fundamentals (composition, exposure, light) carry straight across, but this course teaches the video-specific skills from scratch. Once you've got a handle on the basics here, Business Photography covers the client and pricing side of turning that into paid work.
What You'll Learn
Module 1
Camera & Gear Basics For Video
Whether you're creating simple, just-yourself-and-your-camera style videos or bigger productions with lighting, props and extras, there's some basic equipment to get familiar with and technical terms you'll need to know. We also give you an overview of the whole video production process, so you can start to get your head around every step involved in producing something worth watching.
Module 2
Exposure, Light & Colour For Video
Some of this will already be familiar from stills photography, and some of it will turn what you know upside down. We look at the exposure triangle through a videographer's eyes — getting exposure right to give the illusion of fluid movement through the many images per second you're shooting — plus working in natural light, tackling controlled lighting setups indoors, and getting colour right: skin tones need to be accurate, and colours need to pop.
Module 3
Pre-Production & Planning
Every video tells a story, and a good one tells it effectively — that doesn't happen by chance, it takes planning. You'll learn how to take the seed of an idea and develop it through visualisation into a script and a storyboard, look at shot types, vantage points and composition ideas, then break your storyboard down into a comprehensive shot list. A well-planned project has the greatest chance of success.
Module 4
Storytelling & Shot Composition
Plan a shoot and compose shots that serve the story you worked out in pre-production, not just whatever looks good in the moment.
Module 5
Audio & Lighting
Capture clean audio and light a scene for video — the technical foundations that make the difference between footage that looks professional and footage that doesn't.
Module 6
Post-Production & Editing
Once you've shot your footage, you need to pull it together into a finished production. Editing can be fun — it can also be frustrating until you're comfortable with the tools and the workflow. We help you get your head around the concepts so you can work toward a smooth edit, familiar with the options you have to get things exactly the way you want them.
Module 7
The Scripted Video
A scripted video works to a plan and pulls together everything covered so far. You'll plan, shoot and edit a short scripted video of your own design — wearing a few different hats along the way, including scriptwriter, location scout, videographer, producer, director and sound director. We guide you through every step to help you create it.
Module 8
The Unscripted Video
Some of the most exciting footage you'll see just happened, and someone happened to be there filming it. We look at unscripted video production, both planned and unplanned — yes, there's a difference — and help you bring those moments of footage together into your own productions.
Module 9
Publishing & Client Work
Deliver finished video for social platforms or for a paying client.
