About This Course
This is the course most students start with. It's built for absolute beginners: you'll learn how your camera actually works, how to see and shape light, and how to compose a photo that holds attention — all explained without the jargon.
You'll work through practical, hands-on assignments at your own pace, with a tutor giving feedback on your images along the way. By the end, you'll have a small portfolio of your own work and a clear sense of the direction you want to take next, whether that's a hobby you love or the first step toward paid work.
This course is the right fit if you own a DSLR or mirrorless camera (or are ready to use one supplied as part of enrolment) and want a genuinely structured path through it, rather than piecing technique together from scattered videos. What You'll Learn
Module 1
Camera Fundamentals
What is a digital camera, and how does it actually create an image? We unlock the mysteries of the digital world and get properly familiar with your camera — the buttons, the menus, the controls, where they live and what they do — so you get a genuine feel for the equipment you're working with, what to use when, and how it responds in different situations. From there we discover the exposure triangle: the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO, and how manual mode lets you blur movement, freeze action or set your own depth of field on purpose, not by accident.
Module 2
Composition & Light
With a camera, you're capturing light and recreating a version of what you can see. You'll learn to read the colour, direction, quality and quantity of natural light at different times of day and in different weather, plus light metering and white balance, before trying your hand at both natural and artificial light on a real subject. Then it's time to have some fun with composition — blending foregrounds with backgrounds, the rule of thirds, reflections, lines and curves, and the techniques that help you avoid the common problems and work confidently in challenging situations.
Module 3
Working With RAW Files
Meet your new best friend. Shooting and processing images in RAW is powerful stuff every photographer needs to know — it can genuinely save a shoot when the light didn't cooperate. Through your unit workbook and a series of instructional videos, you'll learn how to work with layers, apply filters and make colour corrections that bring an image to life, unlocking far more control over exposure and colour than a JPEG ever could.
Module 4
Photoshop Retouching Technique
This is where you make detailed, considered adjustments to an image — nothing else does it quite as well. You'll master lasso tools and selectors, healing brushes, clone brushes and patches for natural-looking portrait retouching, then take layers further with split toning, creative effects and watermarking. Every technique is backed by a demonstration video, so you're never just reading about it.
Module 5
Editing Essentials
Adobe Lightroom is the weapon of choice for modern photographers — an image cataloguing and editing system that's both a pleasure to use and a genuine time-saver once you know what you're doing. You'll set it up on your own computer and build a workflow that lets you process a full shoot with both speed and purpose, backed by a module booklet and videos demonstrating every technique.

Building Your Portfolio
Pull your best work together into a portfolio that reflects your own style — the body of work you'll actually show people, whether that's friends, family or a future client.
Module 7
Choosing Your Specialty
A taster across the genres you might specialise in next — nature, travel and other genres of photography, portrait, wedding and event work — to help you see where you want to take things after this course.
