Practising in Dunedin
Practising photography in Dunedin
Dunedin's sun sits lower than anywhere else in this set, and that is a gift for a beginner: golden hour lasts longer, shadows are long and readable, and winter light is usable most of the day. The first assignments, about controlling exposure, are easiest on the harbour. Drive the low road along the Peninsula to Hoopers Inlet at dawn and you have glass-flat water, reflections and a fixed landscape to shoot at every aperture and shutter speed while the light changes. St Clair at sunrise, facing east over the Pacific, is the easy alternative inside the city.
For composition, Dunedin's architecture does the teaching. The Railway Station, First Church and the Warehouse Precinct are exercises in symmetry, verticals and detail, and the Octagon gives you a civic space to practise where to stand. Signal Hill lookout arranges the city and harbour for you at blue hour. For colour, the Botanic Garden's rhododendron dell in October is the assignment students look forward to.
The low-light module is where Dunedin surprises people: the Railway Station lit at dusk, the street-art walls under sodium lamps, and, on a clear dark winter night with a strong forecast, the aurora australis from the Peninsula. Even a beginner can photograph an aurora with a tripod, a wide lens and the settings the course teaches.

What Our Students Say
“I've always had a love for Photography and by doing this certificate it has allowed me to sharpen my skills and take way better images then I ever could have thought of. The Tutors are incredible and the course amazing and in the learning with the course the steps to try different things through Photoshop or Lightroom were easy to follow.
