Question 1

Is there tutor support available?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and it's central to how the courses work — this isn't a library of videos you watch alone. Our tutors are available most days of the week by email and phone, and every assignment you submit gets individual feedback on your own images, not a generic checklist. That means you can ask a genuine technique question mid-assignment, get told specifically what to adjust in a shot you've taken, and get encouragement (or a nudge) whenever you need it, right through to the end of the course.

Question 2

Can I really make a career out of photography?

Accepted Answer

Many students do, though it's worth being realistic about the path — like any creative field, it usually takes time to build a client base and reputation. Our courses are built with that in mind: alongside the technical and creative skills, you'll pick up the business fundamentals (pricing, client management, marketing) you'd actually need to freelance, join a studio, or start your own practice. See our Business Photography Course if that's the direction you're headed, or our Career Paths in Photography article for a broader look at where graduates end up.

Question 3

What equipment do I need to start?

Accepted Answer

Nothing — you can enrol without owning a camera at all. Some of our courses include the use of a professional camera as part of enrolment, so you're not paying for gear on top of tuition before you've even started learning. Full inclusions and pricing for the New Zealand market are being finalised — get in touch and we'll confirm exactly what's included for the specific course you're considering.

Question 4

Can I use my current camera?

Accepted Answer

Yes, absolutely. If you already own a DSLR or mirrorless camera, you're welcome to use it instead of a course-supplied camera — the curriculum is built around principles (aperture, composition, light) that apply regardless of brand or model, not a specific camera's menu system. If you're not sure your current gear is suitable for a particular course (long lenses for wildlife work, for example), mention it when you enquire and a tutor can advise.

Question 5

How long does it take to complete a course?

Accepted Answer

Most students complete a course in around six months studying part-time, with up to twelve months' access to course materials so you can work at your own pace rather than against a deadline. There's no penalty for taking longer than six months, and no requirement to rush — the pace is genuinely up to you, built around fitting study in around work, study or family commitments.

Question 6

What if I have technical issues during the course?

Accepted Answer

Our support team is on hand by phone or through the online learning platform to help you troubleshoot — whether that's trouble logging in, a video that won't play, or an assignment upload that's failing. Technical support is separate from tutor feedback on your photography, so you're never stuck waiting on the same person for both a login issue and creative feedback on your latest assignment.

Question 7

What equipment do I need to study online?

Accepted Answer

Just a computer or tablet and a reliable internet connection — all course materials, video lessons and assignment submissions are delivered through our online learning platform. You don't need specialist software installed before you start (Lightroom and Photoshop are covered separately in the FAQ below), and the platform works from any modern browser, so there's no dedicated app to install first.

Question 8

Do you help with job placement?

Accepted Answer

We don't offer direct job placement or guaranteed work at the end of a course, but you'll get genuine career guidance, portfolio reviews aimed at what employers or clients actually look for, and support as you look for opportunities in the industry. For the business-facing courses in particular, a good part of the curriculum is built specifically around finding and keeping your own clients rather than waiting to be placed — see How to Get Clients: Marketing Strategies for Photographers for a sense of what that looks like in practice.

Question 9

What's included in the course fee?

Accepted Answer

Study materials, ongoing tutor support, and access to the online learning platform are included as standard, along with a professional camera for eligible courses. Full New Zealand pricing — including exactly what's bundled per course — is still being confirmed, so the honest answer today is: get in touch and we'll give you the specifics for the course you're interested in rather than a generic answer here.

Question 10

How much does a course cost?

Accepted Answer

Pricing for the New Zealand market is currently being finalised, with flexible payment options expected once it's confirmed — see our payment options and financing page for how that will work (card payment via Stripe, or an instalment plan through Elevant or Payright). In the meantime, get in touch and we'll confirm the latest information for the specific course you're asking about.

Question 11

What job opportunities are there after completing a course?

Accepted Answer

Graduates have gone on toward wedding and event photography, photojournalism, commercial and studio work, or starting their own photography or videography business — the exact path tends to follow which course (or combination of courses) a student takes. Our Career Paths in Photography blog post covers this in more depth, including how photographers commonly combine several of these income streams rather than relying on just one.

Question 12

Do I need any prior experience?

Accepted Answer

No. Our courses are designed for every level, from complete beginners who've never used a camera off auto mode through to those looking to sharpen skills they already have. If you're genuinely starting from zero, Intro to Digital Photography is built to be the gentlest possible entry point — see the FAQ below on choosing the right course if you're not sure where you fit.

Question 13

Which course is right for me?

Accepted Answer

It depends on where you're starting from. If you've never used a camera beyond a phone, Intro to Digital Photography is the gentlest starting point. If you're ready to build real technical skill from day one, most students start with the Certificate in Photography. Already comfortable with the basics and want to specialise? Look at Portrait Photography or Wildlife Photography. And if you're aiming at this as a career, Professional Photography and Business Photography build the client-facing and business skills that go with it.

Question 14

What's the difference between the Certificate in Photography and Intro to Digital Photography?

Accepted Answer

Intro to Digital Photography is the lower-pressure option — a jargon-free, plain-English introduction for anyone who's never really understood their camera, or is deciding whether photography is worth pursuing further. The Certificate in Photography goes deeper from the outset: full camera fundamentals, composition and light, an introduction to Lightroom editing, and a portfolio you build as you go. Many students who start with the Intro course move on to the Certificate once they know they want to keep going.

Question 15

What's the difference between the photography and videography courses?

Accepted Answer

They're built around different crafts. Our photography courses (from the Certificate in Photography through to specialty options like Portrait and Wildlife Photography) focus on stills — composition, light and editing a single frame. The Videography Course is built around planning a shoot, capturing audio and motion, and editing a finished sequence — a genuinely different skill set, even though a lot of the camera fundamentals carry across.

Question 16

How much time do I need to commit each week?

Accepted Answer

Most students spend around 5-7 hours a week working through course material, though it's genuinely self-paced and built around fitting in around work, study or family — that figure is a guide, not a fixed requirement. Some students work through a module every week or two; others take longer between busy stretches. What matters is finishing your assignments and getting tutor feedback on them before you move on, not hitting a set number of hours.

Question 17

Can I complete more than one course?

Accepted Answer

Yes — plenty of students do. A common path is starting with the Certificate in Photography and moving on to a specialty like Portrait or Wildlife Photography, or progressing to Professional Photography once the fundamentals are solid. Get in touch and we can help you plan a sensible order.

Question 18

Do I need a portfolio or previous work to enrol?

Accepted Answer

No — our beginner courses assume zero prior work or experience. If you already have a portfolio from previous study or practice, that's a bonus for our tutors to build on, but it's never a requirement to enrol.

Question 19

What software will I need?

Accepted Answer

Course materials are built around Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, the industry-standard editing tools referenced throughout the curriculum. A student subscription or free trial is enough to complete the coursework — you don't need to own a full licence before you start.

Question 20

How does tutor feedback actually work?

Accepted Answer

You submit your assignment images through the online learning platform, and your tutor reviews them individually — pointing out what's working, what to adjust, and specific technique to try next. Feedback comes back by email or through the platform, so you can revisit it alongside your own images as you keep working.

Question 21

I'd rather learn face-to-face — can you really teach photography online?

Accepted Answer

Yes — and the key is that it isn't just a library of pre-recorded videos. You can book a live video session with your tutor whenever you like throughout your course: you'll each have your camera in hand, and your tutor can show you exactly what they're doing on their end while you try it alongside them in real time. It's the same one-on-one, hands-on exchange you'd get in a classroom, just from wherever you're studying, and you can book as many sessions as you need.

Question 22

Why not just learn photography from YouTube for free?

Accepted Answer

YouTube is a great place to pick up bits and pieces, and we'd genuinely encourage you to keep watching it alongside your course. But a scattered collection of videos doesn't replace a structured curriculum — our courses walk through the entire process end to end, from the fundamentals through to a finished, edited body of work, so you're not left guessing what you missed. You'll also finish with a certificate of completion, which matters to future clients who want reassurance you know what you're doing before they hire you.

Question 23

Is New Zealand Photography School government accredited?

Accepted Answer

No — we're a private institution, not a government-accredited one. Photography itself isn't a regulated industry in New Zealand, so what actually matters to clients is a strong portfolio, not a government certificate. That's exactly what our courses are built around: real, tutor-reviewed assignments that become the body of work you show people, alongside a certificate of completion from us.

Question 24

I already know how to use a camera — is this course still worth it?

Accepted Answer

If you're past the basics, our courses are built to meet you there rather than start you over on fundamentals. Think of it as refinement and specialisation — developing a consistent editing style, building a genuinely cohesive portfolio, and picking up the specific techniques for the kind of photography you want to focus on. It's a different experience of the same course to a total beginner's, not a step backward.

Question 25

I'm on a payment plan — do I get my certificate straight away, or only once it's fully paid off?

Accepted Answer

As soon as you finish your course, not when the plan is paid off. Your certificate of completion is tied to finishing the coursework, so you don't need to wait out the rest of a payment plan to get it — see our payment options and financing page for how the plans themselves work.
