Practising in Hamilton
Practising photography in Hamilton
The first assignments are about controlling the camera, and the Waikato River through the city is where Hamilton students learn it. The river is a fixed, slow-moving subject: stand on the Victoria Bridge or the riverside path at dawn and shoot the same bend at 1/500 and at four seconds and you will see what shutter speed does to moving water. In winter, when fog lies on the river for an hour after sunrise, the exposure lesson gets harder and better; fog fools a meter, and learning to expose for it is a skill students take everywhere.
Lake Rotoroa faces west and gives you the sunset and silhouette exercises without leaving the city; the Hakarimata summit at Ngāruawāhia gives you an elevated landscape over the Waikato basin. For the low-light module, the riverside lighting and the CBD's murals under streetlights are safe, central subjects.
