The first assignments are about control: making the camera do what you intend. Auckland's harbour is the ideal classroom for it. Stand on Tāmaki Drive at dawn with Rangitoto in front of you and work through the exposure triangle on a subject that does not move: the same island at f/2.8 and f/16, at 1/1000 and at two seconds with the tide washing the rocks. That single morning teaches aperture, shutter speed and ISO better than a week of reading.
For composition, go up. Maungawhau and Maungakiekie give you the whole isthmus to arrange: leading lines of motorway, the curve of the harbour, the CBD as a focal point. Students who struggle with "too much in the frame" learn to simplify from a summit. For light, the west coast at Piha shows you what hard, low, directional sun does to black sand, and the Wintergardens show you soft, even light under glass on a rainy day.
The low-light module is where Auckland excels. Karangahape Road, Queen Street and the Viaduct after dark give you neon, reflections and moving traffic for long exposures, all safely lit and reachable by public transport. Shoot them on a wet night. Your tutor will see the difference in the files you upload.

What Our Students Say
“I've always had a love for Photography and by doing this certificate it has allowed me to sharpen my skills and take way better images then I ever could have thought of. The Tutors are incredible and the course amazing and in the learning with the course the steps to try different things through Photoshop or Lightroom were easy to follow.
