Building a professional portfolio in Auckland
The portfolio you build in this course should be aimed at a market, and Auckland's is broad enough to choose from. Property photography is the largest single genre in the city and a realistic first income; practise interiors in a friend's flat, exteriors at golden hour on a villa street in Grey Lynn or Devonport, and twilight exteriors, which Auckland agents pay a premium for. Corporate work clusters in the CBD and the Viaduct: headshots, office environments, conferences. Hospitality is everywhere; a portfolio of food and interiors shot in Ponsonby and Britomart cafés (ask first) speaks directly to the owners who commission it.
Weddings in Auckland happen on Waiheke, at Kumeu vineyards and on the west coast, so a professional portfolio here needs environmental portraits in wind and coastal light as well as controlled studio work. Second-shooting for an established wedding photographer is the standard route in and your tutor can help you approach it.
