Practising in Wellington
Getting started with digital photography in Wellington
The first exercises are about looking, then about the few settings that change a picture. Wellington's waterfront is a beginner's ideal: flat, well lit, full of people and boats and sculpture, and long enough that you can walk from the railway station to Oriental Bay and never run out of subjects. Frank Kitts Park, the Wharewaka and the diving platform give you foreground, middle ground and background for the composition exercises.
Cuba Street on a Saturday is where you practise photographing people and colour without pressure; the Bucket Fountain is the traditional first "capture the moment" shot. Upload what you make and your tutor will tell you what is working. Most Wellington beginners find the city's changing light frustrating for a week and then realise it is teaching them faster than a sunny city would.
