Practising in Tauranga
Getting started with digital photography in Tauranga
The first exercises are about looking, then about the few settings that change a picture. The Mauao base track is where most local beginners do them: a flat 3.4 km loop with the sea on one side and the mountain on the other, sea birds and surfers as first moving subjects, pōhutukawa for framing, and the sun rising or setting depending on which end you start. Pilot Bay's calm water gives you reflections and boats; Main Beach gives you your first horizon-placement exercise.
The Tauranga waterfront and The Strand are the second stop: the harbour bridge, the marina and the sculptures for a first architecture picture, and cafés for practising indoor light. The Historic Village on 17th Avenue gives you heritage buildings and murals in a small, safe space. McLaren Falls Park, twenty minutes away, gives you your first waterfall and, in autumn, colour.
You do not need a car or a long lens to finish this course. The assignments reward ordinary Bay of Plenty seen carefully: a kiwifruit orchard in flower, the port's cranes at dusk, a surf-lifesaving flag against blue. Upload what you make and your tutor will tell you what is working. The region's sunshine means you will rarely lose a shoot to weather, and its bright light teaches you early to love the edges of the day.
